Now for your tour of the city: there are, of course, tours organised by agencies (especially in the Opera area), which can give you a rapid panoramic idea of Paris.
But we hope you will have time to go on foot and really see the city. Nevertheless you will certainly enjoy a
cruise along the Seine in a "Bateau-Mouche", which offers a view of Paris from an unusual angle. During the cruise you can also have lunch or dinner (cruises leave from Pont de I'Alma, Quai de Monte-bello and the Square du Vert-Galant at the Pont Neuf). To complete this panorama aimed at helping you in your early stages, a few words on "
Paris by night". So much has been said about it... We should remind you, by the way, that you can find all the programmes and times of the cinemas, theatres, concerts, lectures, and other performances such as "sound and light" shows and exhibitions in two small specialised magazines — "Pariscope" and the "Officile des Spectacles" — which come out once a week, on Wednesdays. If you understand French really well and are interested in current events and politics, you will enjoy the "Chansonniers" (Caveau de la Republique, Theatre de Dix-Heures, the Deux-Anes); if you are a lover of songs and variety shows, you will be interested in the Olympia, the Bobino and the "cafes-theatres". Some cabarets have dinner with a show and dinner with dancing, and here the choice is great, ranging from singers to strip-tease.
Finally there are the famous "boites de nuit" — the night clubs around Place Pigalle and Place Blanche and on the hill of
Montmartre: there is an endless succession of them, with their brightly lit signs designed to excite the curiosity of the passer-by. Here the whole strange world of Paris's night life can be seen. Montparnasse, Saint-Germain-des-Pres and the Champs-Elysees offer yet more amusement by night. You can dance to the rhythm of their typical bands or be entranced by the music of the Gipsy violins. We should only remind you of what is true of amusement places all over the world: mind your wallet, sir, and don't leave your purse at your table, madam. Don't be too trusting when you meet a pleasant face. And remember, champagne is bubbly but it can go to your head — and make anybody you meet all too likable!
With these wise words of advice, we can only leave you to go out and get to know Paris, the city which always takes great pleasure in welcoming friends who have come from afar.
